The Story
Tori Amos was admitted to Baltimore's Peabody Institute at age five, the youngest student ever accepted, on a full scholarship. She was expelled at eleven for favoring pop and rock over the classical repertoire and refusing to read from sheet music — the same defiance that would define her songwriting career. A short-lived synth-pop band, Y Kant Tori Read, followed in the mid-1980s before she found her real voice.
Little Earthquakes (1992) reintroduced her as a solo, piano-driven confessional songwriter, and Under the Pink (1994) and Boys for Pele (1996) built out a catalog defined by unflinching, often uncomfortable subject matter delivered with total musical control. That catalog has continued through From the Choirgirl Hotel (1998) and well into the 2020s.
Little Earthquakes included 'Me and a Gun,' an a cappella song recounting her own rape at 21. Amos became the first national spokesperson for RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) after the organization's 1994 founding, using that song and her platform to bring the subject into a mainstream conversation years before it became common.
Amos has been nominated for 9 Grammy Awards across three decades, from Best Alternative Music Album nods for Under the Pink, Boys for Pele and From the Choirgirl Hotel in the 1990s through a 2026 Best Children's Music Album nomination for The Music of Tori and the Muses.
