The Story
The Decemberists formed in Portland, Oregon in 2000 around singer-songwriter Colin Meloy, building a catalog of literary, often historical narrative songs steeped in nautical and folk-tale imagery. Picaresque (2005), The Crane Wife (2006) and The Hazards of Love (2009) — the latter a full song-cycle concept album — established the band as one of the era's defining indie folk-rock acts.
The band continues to write, record and tour, releasing As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again in 2024.
Colin Meloy is also a published author: with his wife, illustrator Carson Ellis, he wrote the Wildwood Chronicles, a children's fantasy trilogy — Wildwood (2011), Under Wildwood (2013) and Wildwood Imperium (2015) — published by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins.
