The Story

Jack Black and Kyle Gass started performing together in Los Angeles in the early 1990s, playing their first real gig at Al's Bar in 1994 with a single song, 'Tribute,' in their repertoire. A three-episode HBO series (1997–2000), made with members of the Mr. Show team, introduced the duo to a wider audience before their self-titled debut album arrived in 2001.

'Tribute' tells the duo's own comic origin myth — Jack and Kyle, confronted by the devil on a lonely road, claim to have played 'the best song in the world' to win a musical duel, though the song itself, notably, is a stand-in for one they say they can no longer remember.

The Pick of Destiny (2006) paired an album with a feature film of the same name, directed by Liam Lynch, expanding the duo's origin story further. Rize of the Fenix followed in 2012.

In 2015, Tenacious D won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for their cover of Dio's 'The Last in Line,' following a 2013 nomination for Best Comedy Album for Rize of the Fenix.
