The Story
Perfume Genius is Mike Hadreas, who introduced himself in 2010 with Learning — a debut of hushed, damaged piano songs recorded at home, so intimate they felt almost too close to hear. Almost nothing about that record predicted where he would take the project.
Album by album he grew louder and stranger without losing the tenderness: Too Bright (2014) sharpened into glam menace, and No Shape (2017) and Set My Heart on Fire Immediately (2020) built cathedral-sized art-pop around that same fragile voice — lush, physical, and unafraid of beauty.
In 2019 he worked in a new form entirely, composing the music for 'The Sun Still Burns Here', a live contemporary-dance work by choreographer Kate Wallich. The score he wrote for it grew into the abstract, largely instrumental album Ugly Season (2022).
Glory (2025) returned to songcraft with some of his warmest, most expansive writing yet. Across it all, Perfume Genius has turned private fragility into public grandeur — proof that the most delicate voice in the room can fill the largest space in it.
