The Story
Neutral Milk Hotel formed around singer-songwriter Jeff Mangum as part of the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective, releasing two studio albums: On Avery Island (1996) and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998), the latter now widely regarded as one of the defining records of 1990s indie rock.
The band went dormant after 1998, with Mangum largely retreating from public performance for over a decade. A reunion followed in 2013, with the full band touring through 2015 before going quiet again.
In 2023, Merge Records released The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel, a box set that earned a Grammy nomination for its art direction.
