The Story
múm formed in Reykjavík, Iceland in 1997, building a sound out of glitch electronics, found sound and hushed, often twinned vocals — early lineups included twin sisters Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir. Their 1999 debut, Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK, and 2002's Finally We Are No One established the band internationally.
The band has continued releasing music since, including 2025's History of Silence, their first album in over a decade.
"múm" is a short, generic-looking name shared by numerous unrelated acts and entities — the Icelandic experimental group is distinct from an Austrian duo, a UK rapper, and dozens of other unrelated "mum"/"múm" namesakes.
