The Story
Mdou Moctar built his first guitar himself as a teenager in Agadez, Niger, before word-of-mouth cassette trading across the Sahel — long before streaming — carried his self-recorded songs from phone to phone throughout the region.
His music grew out of takamba and Tuareg guitar traditions, but pushed them toward searing, high-volume rock, with lyrics sung in Tamashek. Ilana: The Creator (2019) and Afrique victime (2021) established that sound internationally on Matador Records, with Afrique victime's title track built on a lyric protesting French colonial exploitation of Niger's uranium.
Funeral for Justice (2024) carried that political charge further, released as anti-corruption and anti-colonial rallying cries. Days into the album's North American tour, a coup in Niger briefly stranded Moctar and his band in the United States before they were able to return home.
Moctar continues to record and tour internationally, carrying Tuareg guitar music to festival stages while keeping his lyrics rooted in Agadez.
