The Story

Jurassic 5 formed in 1993 from the merger of two Los Angeles crews out of the Good Life Cafe open-mic scene: Unity Committee (Chali 2na, Cut Chemist, Marc 7) and Rebels of Rhythm (Akil, Zaakir/Soup), later joined by DJ Nu-Mark. The group first released a joint single, 'Unified Rebelution,' under both crew names before settling on Jurassic 5, a name shortened for record-label purposes.

At a moment when gangsta rap dominated the mainstream, Jurassic 5 deliberately revived an older style — tightly interlocked four-MC verse-trading built on positive, conscious lyrical content rather than confrontational themes, echoing groups like the Cold Crush Brothers. Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark split production duties, with Cut Chemist rooted in bassline- and loop-driven, crate-digging production and Nu-Mark focused on chopped-up drum programming.

Quality Control (2000) and Power in Numbers (2002) built the group's catalog around that turntablist-driven, old-school-revival sound, before Feedback (2006) closed out their original run. The group has been reunion-only since around 2007, playing occasional shows without a steady stream of new material.

The current lineup — Akil, Chali 2na, Cut Chemist, DJ Nu-Mark, Marc 7 and Soup — still performs together periodically, running their own merch operation directly rather than through a label.
