Explosions in the Sky.

Explosions in the Sky formed in Texas in 1999, building songs almost entirely without vocals — three interlocking guitars and drums swelling from a whisper to a wall and back again. Guitarist Munaf Rayani has described the band's music as their attempt at love songs, just without the words.

The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place (2003) became the record that carried them beyond the post-rock underground, and the following year director Peter Berg's team contacted the band to score the 2004 film Friday Night Lights. Despite having access to rare studio equipment for the project, the band stuck to the same instrumental language that had always defined them.

All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone (2007) and Take Care, Take Care, Take Care (2011) extended the sound further, and the band kept scoring films and television alongside their albums — Prince Avalanche, Lone Survivor, Manglehorn, Big Bend, American Primeval — before returning to their own songwriting with End in 2023.

More than two decades on, Explosions in the Sky remain instrumental music's clearest case for how much a song can say without ever using a word.
