The Story
Dave Matthews Band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991 around a lineup with no dedicated lead guitarist: Dave Matthews on vocals and guitar, Stefan Lessard on bass, Carter Beauford on drums, Boyd Tinsley on violin and LeRoi Moore on saxophone. That absence became the sound — melody carried by strings and horns instead of distortion.
The band built its following the hard way, through constant touring and a live catalog that treats every song as unfinished — Dave Matthews Band is known for reworking arrangements night to night, a practice that has become the whole point of seeing them live. Under the Table and Dreaming (1994) and Crash (1996) turned that touring base into a national one.
On June 30, 2008, LeRoi Moore was injured in an ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville; he died weeks later from complications. Jeff Coffin of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones filled in for the rest of that tour and stayed on. The band has kept playing new configurations of the same songs ever since, most recently on 2023's Walk Around the Moon.
In 2024, Dave Matthews Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — recognition for a band whose real catalog was never quite the records, but the decades of shows that came out different every night.
