The Story
CAKE formed in Sacramento, California in 1991 around vocalist John McCrea, building a sound defined by deadpan spoken-sung vocals, muted trumpet and vintage guitar tone. Fashion Nugget (1996), featuring 'The Distance,' broke the band nationally.
Comfort Eagle (2001) included 'Short Skirt/Long Jacket,' and Showroom of Compassion (2011) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The band continues to record and tour independently, running its own label and store.
In 2016, CAKE released Bound Away, a limited handmade artist's book combining McCrea's lyrics, hand-carved linoleum illustrations by R. Stuhmiller, and a CD, built from eco-conscious materials; copies were donated to special collections including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame library.
