The Story
Andrew Bird began classical violin training via the Suzuki Method at age four, later playing on three Squirrel Nut Zippers albums and fronting his own swing-jazz outfit, Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, from 1997 to 2003 before launching his solo career.
His records are built on two signature techniques: a precise, melodic whistle used as a lead voice, and live violin looping, where plucked and bowed phrases are layered via foot pedals into full arrangements in real time.
In 2020, Bird made his scripted acting debut on FX's Fargo, playing funeral-home owner Thurman Smutny — a role showrunner Noah Hawley reportedly wrote for him and offered with no audition after catching one of his shows in Austin.
He received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album for My Finest Work Yet (2020) and continues to compose for film and television, including scoring work for FX's Baskets and The Bubble.
