The Story
Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia met as teenagers at Mali's Institute for the Young Blind in Bamako, playing together in the school's Éclipse Orchestra under bandleader Idrissa Soumaoro. They married in 1980 and became known internationally as 'the blind couple from Mali.'
Dimanche à Bamako (2004), produced by Manu Chao, carried their sound to a global audience, going platinum in France and reaching the top of European charts — a rare commercial peak for an African act. Welcome to Mali (2008) followed, with Damon Albarn producing and co-writing its lead track, 'Sabali.'
Folila (2012) continued their run of internationally collaborative records, and the duo toured steadily worldwide for decades, carrying Malian guitar music to festival and theater stages on every continent.
Amadou Bagayoko died on April 4, 2025, in Bamako. Mariam has continued to perform and record under the Amadou & Mariam name, releasing new music including L'amour à la folie (2025).
